A bicycle can be a tool to reduce poverty in Africa, improve access to health care, education, potable water as well as being a catalyst is combating climate change. Wiki-bike.com is organising a African Bicycle Design Contest 2010-2011 with the aim to design bicycles tuned to needs of (potential) bicycle users in Africa.
In recent years Cycling out of poverty has provided a large number of bicycles on micro credit to small entrepreneurs in Africa. By getting access to bicycles this way, their business opportunities increase. However, more and more small entrepreneurs indicate that the average African bicycle is not adequate for their businesses. Carrying larger loads is a challenge with a normal bicycle.
